Sis is sick. Way sicker than she's been in a long time. It started with the sniffles, and then of course, got worse. She started throwing up, and everything was bad. The doctor diagnosed her with bronchitis and sinusitis. But unfortunately, she was also still throwing up. Because she couldn't keep anything down, she got really dehydrated. With the sickness, and the dehydration, and the throwing up, there came a migraine. But she couldn't do anything to combat the migraine because of all the other things.
We ended up in the emergency room Thursday night because the pain was so very bad.
After an insanely long wait, during which she was crying and begging me to take her home, she was finally seen by the doctor. Two hours, a half a liter of saline, some anti-nausea meds, and something for the pain later, and it was like she was a brand new person. The pain was gone, and she was tired, but acting like herself again.
She's getting better every day. Still very sick, but she's better than she was two days ago.
Which is why the relatives are still arriving today instead of cancelling their trip.
So yes, house is going to be invaded again. But with Sis sick, it's going to fall to me to pick up the Sis slack. So, you know, socializing. But fortunately, everyone is pretty able to entertain themselves so I don't have to chase after anyone or keep them occupied.
It's still too cold, but I'm dealing as best I can.
Knitting on a scarf right now, because now that the interesting part of the hat is done, it's sort of boring. I'm trying to decide if I want to put some sort of patterning in or not. Until I decide, it's sitting on the table and waiting. When I get my new needles (I ordered a very exciting set of interchangeable needles from Addi and I can't freaking wait to get them!) it'll be the thing I work on. One of the needles I have on the hat right now I don't like, so that, and trying to decide on pattern, is my excuse for leaving it as it is. Since the needles may be arriving as early as next week, I'll have to make some decisions soon. Until then, it can sit and I can work on the scarf.
It's not anything complicated, just a simple basket weave pattern, but the yarn changes color and that's always fun. As I go along, I keep thinking, oh, I'll just do it until the next color comes up. But at least it gives it a little flavor. lol. I didn't buy enough yarn, sadly. But I just today got an email from my LYS saying that their big birthday sale is going on tomorrow, so I figure I'll pop over there and get some more, and 20% off to boot! That's a good thing.
Here's wishing everyone a wonderful weekend!

Too Cold and Other Stuff
I thought I was pretty inured to the cold. I've lived here my entire life, it's always been like this, I thought I was used to it. But this below zero weather? Yeah, I've had enough. It's too dang cold. Can I have my 20s back please?
Brub is being sworn in today, and he'll officially be a lawyer. I have to go to work, so sadly I won't get to watch, but Tato and Mum are going and Tato agreed to take pictures if he could. It's a big deal, and I'm proud of Brub.
I've implemented a time budget! Can you believe it? Finally! lol. Okay, so it's still a little, shall we say, flexible. I think it needs to be because you know what happens when I make plans. But I've got all the important things in there, the things I need and want to do. And largely it consists of: when I get home from work I do X on a certain day. It's been working for a few days. So I'm going to keep at it. Today, being Wednesday, means that when I get home, I write.
Now the computer is near the window, and that makes things a big chilly, but I will deal. I have my fingerless mitts, slippers, and a wrap. So I think I'll be able to work. As long as my brain doesn't freeze, that is.
Mondays means writing or reading, depending on what needs to get done. Tuesdays are reserved for reading/reviewing. Wednesdays I write. Thursdays I yarn (and will be continuing work on my hat). Fridays are more of a free day, in which I will do one of the three depending on either what needs to get done or what I feel like doing. Saturdays there's sister time, but after that (or before) there is reading and/or writing. And on Sundays is another free sort of day, where I read, write and/or yarn, again depending on what needs to get done and what I feel like. So far, it's been working pretty well, though this past Saturday and Sunday got switched. I'm going to try very hard to continue on this way.
It works well in the regard that I can view it as rewards as well. If I'm in the mood to yarn, but I need to read or write instead, then I tell myself, get through this, get your stuff done, and then you can yarn on this day. I'm finding it to be a good motivation.
So that's the report from my corner. I'm freezing, but I'm doing okay.
How about you all? Things going well with you?

The Traverse
So my cousin and her kids showed up on Wednesday night because they were flying out of our airport early the next morning to go back to Colorado for a visit.
They arrive, hugs and kisses all around, and then my sister says "Your cousin broke her car."
I cocked an eyebrow at Sis. Sis gave a put upon sigh. "She was turning onto our street and then, bam! Grinding and squealing."
I just shook my head. Couldn't be as bad as all that. I said, "I'll take a listen when we move the cars around later."
Yep. Grinding and squealing, and not just a little. I walked back into the house and said to Sis, "Your cousin broke her car."
Sis laughed. "How bad?"
I just shook my head again. "Bad enough that if she wants it to go to the dealer for repairs, we should have it towed. It's probably just the ball bearings, which shouldn't have gone on a car that only has 18,000 miles on it, but if it's worse, I don't want to drive it."
So while the cousin is visiting relatives, Sis and I are having her car towed to the dealership so it can get fixed.
The sad part? It's a Chevy Traverse, and I absolutely love driving it, and I had permission to do so whenever I wanted while she was gone, except it's now out of commission so I don't get to. *pout*
The good news? If it's really just the ball bearings like I think it is, then it's a quick and relatively easy fix. I'm just glad that I'm not the one to have to pay for it!

Incoming...Yet Again
When I first got the news, I'll admit I was kind of pissed. I didn't want them here, interrupting my weekend with their noise and their chaos.
Then, I got sort of excited. Because it'll be nice to see them again. And my aunt is coming this time as well, and she's my godmother and we have a special bond even if she makes me angry sometimes with her small minded views.
Now, I'm sort ambivalent to the whole thing. They're coming, there's nothing I can do about it, and I'll just roll with it. Hide away, write, read, yarn, not deal with anything I don't have to deal with. It'll be all good.
Fortunately, this time, it's only for two days and one night. The chaos will reign supreme and then it will be over. I can handle that. I swear.
Maybe if I keep repeating it, it will become true.
At any rate, family is coming for a visit. Wish me luck!

Pomp and Circumstance
I'm not doing so well on the whole putting up posts thing, am I?
I've been very scattered lately. I'm having trouble focusing on any one thing for any length of time.
On top of that, there's a big to-do tomorrow: Brub graduates from Law School! Huzzah! We're all super proud of him, and very excited for him and his future. But it's not the ceremony, of course. After that, there's a party. As well there should be.
But you know me and crowds...
So I'm not looking forward to all the hoopla of the afterwards. Big crowds of people, needing to be "on" and socializing...Yeah, I'm shuddering just thinking about it. I can fake it, but I'm going to be drained--physically and emotionally--by the end of it.
On top of all that, there's more drama...the kind that hurt me several weeks ago. I'm not going to hash it all out, but I'm certainly having to shore myself up, be brave, and do what is best for me. I don't want a confrontation, that serves no one, so I'm going to have to employ the "walk away" technique. I've been visualizing it in my head, so I think that if the need should arise, I'll be able to tactfully say that I don't have to take that kind of attitude/abuse, and then walk away.
But at any rate: Graduation! Yay Brub! Congrats!

What a Way to Spend Sunday
Okay, so yesterday didn't turn out like I wanted at all. Are we surprised? Not really, no. I'm actually not too upset about it. Just kind of shrugged and went with the flow. And as much as I thought, "there's always tomorrow" I am feeling pretty lazy today. So I figure I'm just going to go along and see what happens, what I feel like doing. There's nothing pressing that has to get done. So I figure I'm all right there.
So far the only things I've actually been able to accomplish is removing the collection of coffee mugs that has been accumulating and feeding the cats.
Also got stabbed by a fork.
But I've got the movie cued up (Despicable Me 2) and the yarn at the ready and I'm going to see if I can get some of that done today.
The muse hit me, hard and fast, yesterday and I got a bunch of words on the page. That felt really good and was one deviance from the "plans" that I didn't mind at all. We'll see where it goes. I'm loving the new world and I love my MCs, so it should be good.
Of course, there's still snow. And at some point today, I'll have to go out and clear some of it away.
Work, lately, has been both better and worse. There are moments I dread going in and being there completely. And there are times that it's pretty good. The hard part, for me, is never knowing exactly where I stand and I always feel like I'm on edge. I'm working on getting into a better head space about it all. At least until I win the lottery. :)
But I have the rest of today before I need to worry about that. There's a pot of tea in my future--I got a new flavor yesterday and I'm looking forward to trying it. Tea, yarn, movies. That's a way to spend a Sunday.
Hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend and that the week ahead looks glorious!

Postidays
It's a word I recently learned and it certainly fits. Post holiday = postiday!
It's always a bit of a let down, isn't it, if you celebrate the holidays? After Christmas is over, there's sort of a black hole. It's like you spend all this time getting ready, presents and wrapping and decorating and getting into the holiday spirit and remembering the reason for the season and there's this great big lead up and then...splat...it's over. And quickly too.
I'm trying not to get the positdays blah get to me by keeping Christmas up for a bit longer. Maybe next weekend, or even the weekend after, I'll be ready to take down the decorations and let the season go. But for now, I'm still enjoying the garlands and wreaths and twinkling lights on the tree.
I'm headed off to work in a bit. But I have the next two days off. Of course, that makes going in today extra difficult. But I'll muddle through somehow. :)
No big plans for the New Year, just a quiet night at home. I'm very much looking forward to that. 2013 was a big year for me. 2014 holds even more possibilities.

Omen
A good omen appeared to me yesterday...and the day before for that matter. I'm feeling much more positive about the changes in my life. It's funny how something like that, and the way you choose to interpret it, can really brighten your outlook. I'm not a hundred percent there yet, but I'm feeling good. I think it was something I was meant to see and feel.
Thank goodness it's Friday. I've been ready for Friday all week.
I'm on kid duty tomorrow. Basically, it means that I'm going to have to haul my bum out of bed before the sun rises. Hopefully, they'll fall asleep for a few hours once they arrive. And then I'll spend the better part of the day chasing after a not quite two year old and a nine month old who is getting increasingly more mobile. We do have a pack and play now, so at least if things get crazy I can toss the little one in there with some fun toys and she at least won't be making a break for the stairs or the cats or trying to get into anything. After they're gone, I'm certain I'm going to be in desperate need of a nap.
Hoping to also get more settled this weekend. I don't know if I'll actually be that lucky. But I'm very tired of living in chaos. Very, very tired of it. Everything is still in disarray and I can't find anything I'm looking for and I'd just like to be able to hang my damn clothes up in the damn closet. Soon, though, hopefully very soon. When I manage to get a little something accomplished, I start itching to get more done. Only I can't yet, due to circumstance out of my control. Oh well. I honestly believe there will be a day soon when I've got everything taken care of and all this will be a distant memory.
Hey, the crow appeared to help me make those steps toward change. I've got no choice but to start walking.

Random Thoughts and Observations
After the freakish cold of earlier this week, it's starting to warm up again. It's because I actually dug out and set up the space heater. I take heart in the fact that it will get cold again sooner rather than later.
I'm torn about what the BFF's birthday present is going to be. I thought I had it all figured out but then a thought just occurred to me that would be pretty awesome. Same thing, but different pattern. I can't make a decision. I hate it when I'm dithering.
Sis's blanket got a few more rows on it. I promised it to her quicker than the last one but...yeah, I don't know if that's going to happen. Next year, she totally getting cash. I'm a bad sister for always putting her project on the back burner to do other things.
My goddaughter's birthday is in November. I have this fanciful notion of it being a thing that I always make her something for her birthday. If that's the case, then I need to get cracking.
I've always got another project on the horizon, it seems. Something else I want to make more than whatever I'm making at the moment, a different story I want to write than the one I'm working on. If someone would stop feeding the plot bunnies, I might be able to get something accomplished. (Don't really stop feeding the bunnies, I love that you do!)
Speaking of writing...Second Blessing is shaping up to be a good time. I'm really liking these guys!
I really need to clean the fish tank. That's my first order of business when I get home tonight. It's going to be fun carting the water up and down the stairs. *insert sarcasm here*
My second order of business is to write out a detailed time budget. I'm going to do a few days at a time and see just how well I can stick to it. I need a little extra discipline in my life right now. There are a lot of things that need to be budgeted in but if I think too much about it right now, I'm going to get overwhelmed.
I absolutely need to find a better arrangement for what's plugged in to which outlet.
I also really want some cookies.

Mental Health Day
I have taken the day off of work. Originally, I did it because I thought I would be babysitting, but I don't have to and I decided to keep the day off anyway. A mental health day.
Can I just say how hard it was to go into work yesterday knowing that I had today off? I kept thinking I should have just taken both days. But I went to work and I worked hard and then I came home.
And now, no work today. So coffee first, of course. And then I'm gonna spend the day doing what I feel like doing, if I feel like doing it. And only if I feel like doing it.
It's my favorite way to decompress.

Dichotomy
I spend a lot of time in my own head. I over think things. A lot.
I worry. I worry about things I can't control and about how I'm perceived by other people. I second guess the things I say, the things I write, the decisions I make.
I fixate on things I imagine happening. When things don't happen according to the script, I get disproportionately sad about it.
I don't feel I'm worthy of the praise that I get about things that I've done.
I don't feel worthy.
And yet...
At the same, I'm actually a pretty happy and confident person. It takes me a very, very long time to feel comfortable in social situations, but once I do, I'm fun and funny.
I'm very affectionate with the people I'm closest to and have no problem expressing my love and gratitude for them.
I take pride in what I do and I like to show things off.
I am well liked, loved even, and I know there are many people who I value that value me right back.
Just like everyone else, I have good days and bad days. But sometimes I think that I can't really have both sets of emotions. That I have to either be the first set or the second set. That I'm really one, and the other is a lie. That it's just something I'm forcing myself to feel because I think I should. And I don't know which person I really am.

A Bit Of Me
I went back and forth for a long time about whether I wanted to put this up, but in the end, I decieded to do it.
First, I have to say that I had a really fun time at the Race for the Cure yesterday. It was not surprising that there was something like 6,000 people there. But what I loved the best was seeing the women in the bright pink survivor shirts. And most of them were carrying little signs where they wrote in how many years they'd been cancer free. There were some with small numbers, a year, or three, or four, but there were some that were much longer, seventeen years or twenty two. One woman I saw had been cancer free for 35 years. Can you imagine being diagnosed three decades ago when there weren't the medical advancements that there are now? I can't imagine the terror that a cancer diagnosis would cause then. But there she was, thrity five years later, still determined to make a difference.
Anyway, our table had such good freebies, we ended up running out. Fortunately, it was just as the actual walk/run portion of the events were getting underway, and most everyone went to go do that and we packed up and went home. But first I stopped by another table where my friend, Cindy Sue, was working. She works for another diagnostic imaging company but they do a lot of different kinds of tests (unlike my office that only does the one kind of testing). One of our radiologists (who we actually share, he reads for both groups) diagnosed his own wife last year with breast cancer. They caught it early and they were able to treat her successfully. But there was a huge push by this doctor to get a huge team together and raise lots of money. Which they did. Cindy Sue was working at the table, painting faces. She's very, incredibly artistic and I am in awe of her talent. I wanted to share it with you, even though it just a wee bit of artistry, because I can never get stuff to come out like this when I try. But it's on my face. So that's why I wasn't sure if I was going to put it up. But, like I said in the first sentence, I decided to do it anyway. So, here's Cindy Sue's bit of paint magic...and a bit of me, in profile. Focus on the paint and not me, okay?
Race For The Cure
By the time this goes up, I'll already be at the fair grounds to work the booth at the local Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
I work for a company that does diagnostic imaging, MRI's to be specific, and one of the services we provide is Breast MRI's. They allow for better imaging than just a mammogram, if you have dense breast or have had breast cancer or a very strong family history. So, we have a booth set up at the local Race for the Cure.
A few hours of my day, passing out freebies and answering questions, is not too much to ask for a very worthy cause. I have had one aunt and two cousins fight this disease and win. I had another aunt who was in her eighties when the lump was found and lost the battle.
So that's how I'll be spending my morning, giving back a little.
And then, after a nap, more yarn.

Shindig, Breakfast, and Movie
I am a devout Whedonite. Joss Whedon is my master.
He created this show that aired ten years ago that got shafted by the network it aired on but developed a hardcore cult following. I'm talking, of course, about Firefly. Amazing show. Yesterday, we had a shindig. Essentially, we had us a little party, ate some good food, and watched episodes of Firefly. It was awesome.
Today, no work. Instead, the BFF and I are having one of our days. We're going to breakfast at our place (yeah, we have a diner we go to and adore) and have our favorite breakfasts. And then we're gonna hit the cinema and see Oz The Great and Powerful.
Even as happy as I am to have a day to destress and just hang out with the BFF, I'm already antsy about going to work tomorrow. I'm trying very hard to not let the work thing stress me out at all, because I do like the job and the people I work with, and I suppose that on the one hand it's good I'm making a point to really pay attention to what I'm doing. But on the other hand, it makes those eight hours tough.
So, I'm going to do my damnedest just to enjoy the day. Nothing better than a little playtime with my beautiful BFF.

Winter Again
Apparently, it's winter again. Wednesday, we had record 63 degree weather (that's 17 ish for you C folks). Yesterday was a clear, though incredibly windy, day. The snow had all melted away. Today, I woke up to the snow blizzarding down. OK, maybe not quite a blizzard. But on and off all day long, it kept snowing. The drive to and from work was not at all fun. I'm happy to be home, ensconced in my warm house and my comfy pants.
I did something today, inspired by Brad's post over at 2 boys in love, that took me outside my comfort zone. I'm really glad that I did it, though the relative anonymity of the internet helped. And honestly, it never occurred to me until just this minute that me posting on this blog, sharing my life and crafting, is a way for me to step outside of myself as well. I do it because I like to write and because I want to share my love of the fiber arts. I'm relatively safe because I only share what I want and my life is still private but still...let's just say I have trouble in social situations and this allows me to have that without anxiety. Maybe I'm taking steps forward too.
This weekend is dedicated to the yarn. I'm about halfway done with Mom's present and since it's made with the thick yarn and a big hook, I think I'll work on getting that done first. The plan is to either be done with it by tomorrow afternoon or put it away at the point anyway and work on the baby's blanket. That's got a hard deadline of the 10th. If I don't finish Mom's wrap by the 11th, well, she can have it when I'm done. She'll appreciate it just as much.
And then it's back to work on Sis's afghan!

Piscean Angst
I don't put much stock in astrology as a whole. But the fact of the matter is, the description of my sign is scary accurate. Sometimes, I go searching on the web to find it, just to read a different version and find out that, once again, even the new version describes me.
The parts about being creative and sensitive are easy for me identify with. Easy to hear, easy to believe. Compassionate and kind I embrace. Intuitive and sympathetic? Absolutely. Even most the not so flattering aspects are OK: easily led, secretive, escapist.
But the part about being filled with self doubt and not knowing my own worth? That part is both true and horrifying at the same time. I don't want to have the constant doubts and paranoia that I'm going to get in trouble for something, or that I've done something wrong, or that I should be doing something different. It plagues me mostly at work, even when I know I'm doing the things correctly. And I get myself all worked up.
It happens with the yarn, too. I'll spend all this time working on something, convinced of its awesomeness and then when I've finished it and am about to give it to whomever it belongs to, I'm filled with the kind of doubt that is almost crippling. I'm convinced that they will hate it, or it's ugly, or it just turned out very, very bad and I should just buy something instead.
And, of course, with the words. The words which fill my head and live there and the characters and stories that take up all my brain space...when I put them on the page, I'm absolutely certain they are not good enough to see the light of day. They are not fit for human consumption.
I've taken to talking myself out of the dizzying death spiral when the self doubt surfaces. And it works...for a minute or five. And then, before I know it, I'm back down at the bottom and the process has to start all over again. Then I'm calm for a bit, five or ten or sixty minutes. And then, down I go because I'm absolutely convinced that the the bad is right and the good is wrong.
I am a Pisces. It is part of my nature. But that doesn't mean that I can't learn to cope with it. Right in this moment, I'm in a good place. Accepting that I am who I am and that I can let go of the self doubt.
At least until the next time it rears its ugly head.

Apathy
It's SSS all over again. Because I can't find a pattern that I really like and everything that I think of on my own is something that I've done before and don't want to do again. I need to make this baby blanket and I've started it I don't even know how many times. But I just keep frogging it. Worse than that, I have a bunch of other projects that need to get done and I just don't wanna do it.
Later today, I need to put together a new bookshelf. This is something that I really enjoy; building things. I am, usually, gung ho about getting something like that done. But I don't even want to do that.
I have a problem.
I'm usually all for working a problem and figuring out the solution. But apathy seems to have me tight in its grip. Apathy is a relentless bastard and it does not give up easily. I can't make myself do anything about it.
I know the only way to combat it is to make myself do something. So, I will make the bookshelf and I will work with yarn. Even though both things will most likely seem like a chore.
Apathy is a cruel mistress.

Imagination
My very active imagination sometimes runs away with me. While it's incredibly helpful when the muse is constructing a story in my brain or the other muse is planning a pattern, it can also be exceedingly detrimental to my wellfare when it goes haywire in my real life. When I've blown a look or a silence way out of proportion and I've convinced myself it meant way more than it actually did. This happens a lot to me at work...when I've decided that the contemplative silence of my co-worker means that she's actually pissed at me because she had to answer the phone when it was my turn because I was away from my desk making a copy...
You see how I can get?
Of course, it then turns into a vicious cycle of me trying to be good and stay at my desk, even when I actually need to get up and do something. And then I think, "She's not really mad, I answer the phone when it's her turn and she's away from her desk." And I've got myself convinced that it's all in my brain and then next thing I know, I'm all upset because I think she's mad again.
Anyway, it really is all in my head and I just need to let it go.
And I really need to figure out a pattern for that baby blanket because that baby is almost two months old. But it has to be something that I don't hate with a vengence because if it is I'll just keep frogging it.
And I need to stop complaining about it and just get it done.
Maybe I'll be able to refocus my imagination into a fruitful endeavor.

The Month of Birthdays...
...concludes today with my awesome big brother. Happy Birthday, Brub!
Yes, I am well aware that August does, in fact, have three more days to the month. They aren't as important. When I get to work in the morning, I'll post the last of the money for the month. That's not to say that I won't have any work to do, because I will, just that a little of the stress will be gone because I'll have plenty of time to get it done. For this reason alone, I'm a fan of monthend.
I have yet to finish baby Annabelle's blanket. I have to start over from scratch because I ran out of yarn and hate it anyway. Today, I finally settled on a pattern (I think) so my goal is to get that done this weekend. My big move has been pushed back till the end of September or thereabouts so I'll have plenty of time. Not that I've actually finished anything I was supposed to get done previously. The summer lazies have got me in a firm hold.
I did write a chapter in one of my books the other day. That felt good. And I've made some good progress on Shane and Jamie's rewrites. Okay, maybe not good progress, but a little bit of progress nonetheless. But see, there's a problem...
There are these other characters in my head that don't fit into anything I've got going right now. And they are being very demanding. And I'm not sure I can put them off. They might have to get down on the page, just so they'll shut up for a while. The muse, she is insistent sometimes. I've got a broad plot and a good feel for the characters but none of the salient details. And I just know it will turn into a series because everything I write turns into a series because I freaking love series. And apparently italics.
On an unrelated note, next Monday is Labor Day and the following Monday, I took off from work so I have two weeks in a row of four day weeks. I'm looking forward to it a lot.

Ch-ch-changes
It seems like August is a month for moving because The BFF is moving too. And that's what I'm helping her with today. As I have the bigger car, better for moving things with, I'm going to her current place of residence, packing her stuff into said car, and driving it to the new place of residence. Then I will help her schlep all the stuff from previously mentioned car and into the previously mention new place. I don't think she's going to make me help unpack her things, though I would, and for that I'm grateful because after all the moving of things I'm pretty sure I'll be ready for a nap. Naps are good!
The BFF and I also sort of having this standing "internet date" thing we do. Friday and/or Saturday nights, if we don't have anything else going on, we each do our own thing while Skyping. We've done it for years (though it used to be AIM) and it's just our thing. Tonight, I have a feeling there will not be date because she'll be unpacking. She may, if she gets the webz set up, skype with me whilst unpacking. But it's OK either way because I have much writing to do.
As previously mentioned, I'm re-writing the bulk of Jamie and Shane's story. And the world that the BFF loves so much is in desperate need of a chapter. My brain has been kind of all over the place and I need to reign that in. So that's my goal after the moving and the nap. And a shower because it is, as usual for summer here, very humid and that will make a gross. sticky, sweaty mess.
And, of course, there is much yarning to be done. But that's my plan for tomorrow. I can probably get baby blanket number 2 done in a few more hours of work so that's my goal for that. I need to get it off my plate so I can move something else up.
So that's the plan for the weekend: moving, shower, nap, writing, baby gift, then Lyse's 'ghan. I'll let you know how it goes.
